Tantra is neither a collection of forgotten ancient rituals nor a teaching on the art of pleasure. Tantra is a living science of energies aimed at achieving enlightenment, but its teachings have also brought about changes in everyday aspects such as health, well-being, abundance, and relationships.
Thus, tantra is an ancient and profound journey towards awareness, energy, and spiritual awakening. In this article, we will discuss the ten cosmic powers that form the core of tantra teachings and help us understand our inner nature and connection to all of life.
The Dance Between Shiva and Shakti
What makes tantra special is the understanding that all of existence is sacred—including our everyday lives. Every moment, every experience, and every feeling is an expression of divine consciousness. According to Tantra teachings, the entire universe and everything in it is an eternal dance between two energies, from which our everyday reality is born.

This cosmic dance takes place between Shiva and Shakti.
- Who is Shiva?
Shiva symbolizes masculine energy, pure consciousness – the incomprehensible, unchanging, and observing principle.
- Who is Shakti?
Shakti is feminine energy, infinitely creative and dynamic life energy, expressed in all the diversity of earthly life.
When we think about life and its forms – both beautiful and uncomfortable, living and lifeless, the subtle structure of the human body and psyche – a picture emerges of incredible creativity and a holistic system, which tantra treats as a sacred expression.
The Great Cosmic Game, or Lila
The following articles open the door to this journey, where we discuss a central part of tantric teachings – the ten cosmic powers, or Dasha Mahavidyas.
What are the 10 cosmic powers and Mahavidyas for understanding tantra?
As mentioned earlier, Shakti is the general principle of feminine energy, which has 64 different forms or “faces.” The ten cosmic powers or Mahavidyas are also manifestations of Shakti. They can be viewed either as an independent energy system or as part of the 64 aspects of Shakti. These ten cosmic powers are like goddesses who embody different universal forces. Their synergy creates the reality we perceive and experience.
Each Mahavidya is a unique aspect of Shakti’s infinite potential. Some of them are gentle and supportive, others frightening or even terrifying, but all of these energies are familiar to us from our own life experience. Thus, it can be said that the ten Mahavidyas are invisible energies, but we have experienced their influence and manifestation in our lives to a greater or lesser extent.
The 10 Mahavidyas with their brief meanings:
- Kali – The goddess of time and destruction who destroys ego and ignorance. She is a primal force and the beginning of all things. (Read about Kali here)
- Tara – A guide and savior who helps overcome life’s difficulties. She is also associated with compassion and sound.
- Tripura Sundari (Shodashi) – The beauty of the three worlds. She represents perfection, beauty, and pure consciousness.
- Bhuvaneshwari – The mistress of the universe who rules space and the manifested world.
- Bhairavi – The fearsome goddess who symbolizes transformation through discipline and “holy fury.”
- Chhinnamasta – A goddess who cut off her own head, symbolizing self-sacrifice and cessation of the mind (liberation from desires).
- Dhumavati – A widow goddess who represents emptiness, loneliness, and the wisdom that lies in suffering and letting go.
- Bagalamukhi – The pacifier of enemies and negativity. She has the power to stop speech and movement, bringing inner peace.
- Matangi – Goddess of knowledge, art, and speech. She is often associated with “impure” or non-social aspects, showing divinity in everything.
- Kamala – Goddess of the lotus, who is a tantric form of Lakshmi. She brings abundance, happiness, and material well-being.
But why are the ten cosmic energies considered so important in Tantra?
Each of the ten cosmic powers acts as a bridge to pure consciousness, or Shiva. According to tantric teachings, this means that by working with energies that are actually very accessible to us—because they are part of our everyday, earthly life—it is possible to reach very high levels of consciousness and experience enlightenment. In Tantra, the pure union of Shakti and Shiva represents precisely this experience of enlightenment, where consciousness and energy merge into a unified whole.
Becoming aware of these energies and working with them consciously helps practitioners harmonize different aspects of their lives and bring more balance to their everyday lives. Tantra does not separate spiritual and everyday life, but sees them as mutually supportive and complementary wholes.
It is also exciting that, according to Tantra teachings, every person has a natural connection with one of the Mahavidyas. This means that we all have an innate ability to work with certain energies, and it is through these energies that results and changes can manifest more easily and naturally.
The ten cosmic forces are like keys in tantra that open the door to deeper self-awareness and spiritual growth. Learning about these powers helps us understand how every aspect of life—whether joyful or painful—is part of a larger whole, and how it is through these experiences that we can move toward greater awareness and enlightenment.
