The 10 Cosmic Powers: Tara as Compassion and Inner Courage, and Tripura Sundari as the Source of Cosmic Beauty and Desire

The ten cosmic powers are not merely mythological figures worshipped in temples in India. They represent states of consciousness — qualities of energy that can be consciously activated when we create the inner space where these qualities can emerge.

Among these forces are Tara and Tripura Sundari, two powerful expressions of Shakti that guide us through very different yet complementary dimensions of human experience: courage and compassion, beauty and desire.

Tara — The Power of Compassion and Inner Courage

There are moments when life is not easy, when we feel as if we are standing on the edge of a cliff. It may be an unexpected breakup, the loss of a job, illness, or simply an unexplained inner anxiety.

It is precisely in such moments that the energy of Tara becomes relevant.

The name Tara literally means “the one who carries across” — across fear, across confusion, across inner storms. Tara is the aspect of Shakti that reaches out her hand when we feel we are losing our footing in life.

At first glance, images of Tara may seem frightening. She may stand upon a corpse, her gaze penetrating, sometimes holding weapons in her hands. But as with many tantric symbols, this does not represent violence. It represents radical awakening.

Tara cuts through the illusions that hold us captive. She does not comfort the ego — she liberates us from it.

In practical life, Tara’s energy may appear as the courage to make a decision we have long postponed. It may be an honest conversation with a partner, choosing a new direction in our career, or finally asking for help.

Tara does not lead us into comfort zones. She leads us to truth. And truth liberates.

She reminds us that crisis is not punishment — it is a transition. Even in the darkest night there is direction. Within each of us exists a compass that can guide the way, if we become quiet enough to hear it.

In tantric understanding, Tara is also connected to sound — the primordial vibration from which the entire universe emerged.

Activating the Energy of Tara

1. Begin with honesty

Tara appears where we are ready to stop pretending. Ask yourself:

  • What am I avoiding?
  • Where am I not living my truth?

Write the answers down. Even this step begins to open the door.

2. Take one small but courageous action

It does not have to be a dramatic leap into the unknown. Instead, take one concrete step: send that message, book that appointment, say the sentence you have been holding back.

Tara’s energy activates through movement.

3. Meditation with fear

Sit quietly and bring your greatest current fear into awareness. Do not try to solve it. Do not analyze it.

Simply invite Tara and ask for support. You may use a simple phrase:

“I am ready to see the truth.”

Just breathe and feel. When you do not run away but remain present, an inner strength begins to arise. This is the space of Tara.

Tripura Sundari — Cosmic Beauty and Desire

Tripura Sundari is the ruler of the three worlds — the physical, the subtle, and the causal realms. For a human being, this may symbolize the harmony of body, mind, and soul.

When these three are in balance, we experience a deep peace that does not depend on external circumstances.

The name Tripura Sundari means “The Most Beautiful of the Three Worlds.” Yet this beauty is not merely aesthetic. It is the beauty of harmony — the alignment of balance, awareness, and love.

She is the energy that makes us pause before a sunset, the force that moves the heart through music, the spark that makes us fall in love.

In tantra, beauty is not considered superficial. Beauty is a path to consciousness. When we experience something truly beautiful, the mind stops for a moment. A space of silence appears. In that space, pure awareness may reveal itself.

Her beauty is not only the beauty of form — it is magnetism. It is the attraction between two people, the inspiration in an artist’s heart, the inner call to step into the unknown.

If Shiva represents pure, unmoving consciousness, then Shakti as Tripura Sundari whispers:

“Experience.”

Desire as a Sacred Energy

Tripura Sundari reminds us that desire is not a problem — it is power.

The question is whether we are the masters of desire or its servants.

Can we perceive the pure energy behind our desires?

When we recognize desire as a divine movement within us, it becomes a bridge to deeper awareness.

Desire is energy that can either bind us or liberate us. If we cling to our desires — “I must have this, otherwise I cannot be happy” — desire becomes suffering.

But when we learn to experience desire as a flow, as a creative spark that can be consciously directed, it becomes a source of strength.

When we learn to distinguish between the whims of the ego and the deeper calling of the soul, life itself begins to transform into a conscious work of art.

Desire, no longer a blind impulse, becomes vitality and creative expression. And when we learn to experience, respect, and guide this energy, life ceases to be a random sequence of events and becomes a passionate, conscious creation.

Practices of Tripura Sundari: Refining Desire

1. The Alchemy of Desire

When a strong desire arises — sexual, emotional, or creative — do not immediately direct it outward.

Sit. Breathe.

Feel where the desire lives in your body. Play with the sensation: intensify it, soften it, observe how it moves.

Do not attach a story to it. Do not connect it to a specific person or situation.

Simply allow the energy to exist.

After a few minutes you may notice something interesting:
the object fades, but the energy remains.

Can you feel more power within yourself?

2. Beauty as a Gateway to Presence

Look at something truly beautiful — nature, art, or a person.

Usually the mind quickly moves:

“How beautiful.”
“I want this.”
“This makes me happy.”

Pause that movement.

Stay present with the beauty. Feel yourself merging with what you perceive as beautiful.

Breathe and immerse yourself in the experience. With each breath, go deeper into the sensation until you feel a fullness of being.

Tantra as a Living Experience

Tantra begins the moment you decide to live more consciously.

If these themes do not feel like mere ideas but touch something personal and alive within you, the best way to understand them is through experience.

One place where courage and desire, truth and beauty can become a practical path is the Estonian Tantra Festival — a space where these energies are explored not only as concepts, but as lived experience.
